The supervisor works on other people's practice. They open a space where an experienced professional dares to look at their blind spots, they safeguard the quality of a support relationship, and, as a training designer, they turn their own know-how into transmissible knowledge. The material a supervisor works with
The supervisor does not work on a situation, but on the way a practitioner works on it. Their material is the other's practice: their choices, their doubts, whatever replays in the support relationship and even in the supervision relationship itself.
As a training designer, they work yet another material: their own know-how, often tacit, which has to be made explicit and teachable. Passing on not recipes, but a living practice.

The settings you practice in
Supervision is practiced one-to-one as well as in groups, with coaches, therapists, trainers, helping professionals. It is almost always practiced alongside a support activity, and assumes that the supervisor is themselves supervised.
The frame is delicate: often tripartite when an institution is involved, it demands holding confidentiality when interests diverge, and never standing in for the person being supervised.
To supervise is to help someone see what they do not see, without seeing it in their place.

What a supervisor does, concretely
The supervisor first holds a stance: distinguishing supervision from evaluation, from advice and from coaching, and anchoring it in a held ethic. Then they contract the arrangement, including in a tripartite context, and turn a vague request into working objectives.
At the heart of the session, they open a reflective space, read a situation on several levels, and name the resonances that replay in the relationship. They compose an integrative practice, from psychodynamic and humanistic contributions to systemic and narrative approaches, and facilitate peer supervision groups.
As a training designer, finally, they analyze their own practice to extract what can be taught, and design situations that put practice to work, not just knowledge.
